What is heartburn?
Heartburn just as the name suggests is a burning sensation which can make you feel as if the inside of your body is on fire. However, this does not necessarily happen within the heart; as a matter of fact heartburn most commonly takes place in the upper abdomen around the breastbone which is the bony plate shaped like a ‘T’ in the centre of the Thorax.
Heartburn otherwise known as acid indigestion or acid reflux is said to feel just like a mini heart attack apart from heartburn is not life threatening and is fairly common. Up to four in ten people suffer from heartburn each year some are unfortunate enough to get this daily whereas some people may only suffer from this occasionally.
It has been reported that people of an older age, who are overweight, pregnant, smoke or even wear tight clothes are most likely to experience heartburn, but why?
What causes heartburn during pregnancy?
Heartburn occurs when the stomach is exposed to high acidic content. A valve at the top of the stomach prevents acid from leaving and if this valve isn’t functioning properly the acid is forced in a backward flow up the gullet to the oesophagus.
Two common foods which are known to cause heartburn are spicy foods and fatty foods but, these are not the only ones. Heartburn can also be caused by tomatoes, peanuts, chocolate, citrus based fruits, peppermint etc. It is unknown why such foods cause this however it is apparent that these foods all help to weaken the LES or increase the amount of stomach acid produced which is why these foods as well as beverages such as coffee and alcohol can cause heartburn.
Just like taste buds each person can taste differently and just like within life events people react differently in contrasting situations. The body mimics this. My body will react differently to certain substances in comparison to how your or anybody else’s body reacts to certain foods or beverages. This is why it is so hard to determine which foods defiantly cause heartburn because everybody’s body is different. I may get heartburn from drinking coffee whereas you may not suffer at all.
Heartburn can most commonly include simple symptoms such burping and food regurgitation. But these are common problems which you can suffer because of any other aspects to health.
If you believe you yourself may have heartburn the most important symptoms you must look out for is a taste of acid in the back of the throat or mouth and burning pains behind the breastbone. Baring in mind these pains although they begin in the breastbone can travel up to the neck and other areas.

Another way you could prevent heartburn is to stop bad habits such as smoking and drinking as the chemicals in cigarettes only weakens the LES making heartburn more common. As for drinking alcohol this can relax the LES which will allow the stomach content to flow backward into the oesophagus. Drinking alcohol also increases the production of stomach acid. Cutting alcohol out completely is not necessary but would be best. However, you could dilute alcohol with water or soda which will be better for the heartburn than drinking straight alcohol.
As mentioned earlier, wearing tight clothes can trigger heartburn so to prevent this try to refrain for wearing belts or clothes which are tightly fitted around the waist. One more useful tip to prevent heartburn would be to chew gum as this stimulates the production of saliva which washed out the acid.
I myself suffered with heartburn during my pregnancy. The constant burning sensation in my chest when trying to sleep. I could just feel it all night.
